Bitcoin rips to an eight-month high above $85,000 as a short squeeze meets a technical bull signal. Bitcoin climbed as much as 5%–7% off the weekend's lows to peak near $85,250, its best level since January, while ether ran to roughly $2,715 (+5–6%); the move came with $648m of short positions forced out in 24 hours, per exchange-tracked data, after Sunday's weekly close above the 50-week moving average — the first such close in 45 weeks (see The Chatter). Markets were also trading into Thursday's scheduled Trump–Xi summit in Washington as a risk-on catalyst, and the crypto-equity complex (Coinbase, Strategy, Circle) extended Friday's rally into Monday. Seven-nation advisory ties North Korea's "WaterPlum" crew to $10.7m stolen from 7,000-plus crypto wallets via fake job interviews. Japan's NPA and National Cybersecurity Office, the FBI, the US Defense Cyber Crime Center, Australia's ASD and Germany's BND/BfV jointly disclosed Friday that the group (aka Contagious Interview) infected more than 30,000 devices across 100-plus countries between December 2025 and July 2026, posing as AI, NFT and crypto-company recruiters — using AI face-swapping on video calls in some cases — to trick developers into running malware that harvested wallet keys and credentials; the agencies assess the funds route back to North Korea's weapons programs via Bureau 313. OCC grants Bastion conditional approval for a national trust bank charter, folding GENIUS Act stablecoin custody under a single federal regulator. The stablecoin-infrastructure firm said Friday the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency gave preliminary conditional approval to convert its New York trust charter (held since February 2025) into a national one; the resulting Bastion Platforms National Trust Company can custody, mint and redeem GENIUS Act-compliant stablecoins and issue white-label wallets nationally under federal oversight, though it's barred from taking deposits or making loans, and the approval carries a six-month clock to finalize. The Chatter
Alex Thorn, Galaxy Research (X, Sep 20–21): flagged bitcoin's weekly close above the 50-week moving average — the first in 45 weeks — as the kind of signal that has historically confirmed a bear-market low is in, while stressing the read is still tentative; he noted bitcoin is up 29% in 35 days off the June low. Alex Thorn on X
Joe Consorti, independent analyst (X, Sep 20–21): took the more bullish side of the same chart, arguing a weekly close above the 50-week average has a 100% historical hit rate for marking the cycle low once the 2020 Covid crash is excluded (75% including it) — "the bear is slain," he wrote, welcoming readers "(tentatively) to the bull market." Joe Consorti on X
Ki Young Ju, CryptoQuant CEO (X, via Cointelegraph, Sep 21): pointed to CryptoQuant's Bull/Bear Market Cycle Indicator turning positive for the first time since early October, arguing the pattern mirrors 2023's recovery and that the bear phase is "pretty much done" even if a further dip isn't ruled out.
