Market signal
A fresh Middle East escalation sends oil to a five-month high and takes some shine off bitcoin's ETF rebound. Brent crude pushed past $111 a barrel Tuesday, its highest since May, as renewed regional attacks rattled risk markets; bitcoin eased back into the low-to-mid $81,000s after trading near $82,900 a day earlier, and ether slipped to roughly $2,380–$2,440. The pullback came a day after bitcoin ETFs logged their best inflow day in a month, underscoring how quickly macro headlines can offset fund-flow momentum. Yahoo Finance
Markets & flows — ETFs, stablecoins & on-chain
Bitcoin ETFs post their best day in a month – almost entirely thanks to BlackRock. US spot bitcoin ETFs took in a net $526.6m on Monday, October 19, per Farside/CoinDesk data, their strongest showing since September 22; BlackRock's IBIT alone pulled in $665.2m, its largest single-day haul in roughly a year, while Fidelity's FBTC (-$83.6m) and Grayscale's GBTC (-$54.9m) were net sellers. The inflow erased last week's outflows but leaves the funds down about $90m for October. CoinDesk, via Farside Investors
Ether and solana funds don't share in the rebound. Spot ether ETFs shed a further $103.3m on October 19, a fourth straight day of outflows, while spot solana ETFs lost another $6.7m – a split that points to bitcoin-specific demand (BlackRock's buying) rather than a broad return of risk appetite to crypto funds. The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure
Wallets tied to April's $285m Drift Protocol hack resume moving funds through Tornado Cash. On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain tracked the exploiter's wallet depositing 25,700 ETH (about $61.6m) into the sanctioned mixer on October 20, after roughly two months of dormancy; the address still holds an estimated 81,864 ETH (about $195m) of the original haul. Drift's own recovery disclosures and outside forensics firms (TRM Labs, Mandiant) have linked the April 1 exploit of the Solana perpetuals exchange to North Korea-affiliated operators. Policy & regulation
The SEC's comment window on its crypto fundraising framework closes today. The 60-day public comment period on "Regulation Crypto Assets" (File No. S7-2026-27) – which would add a Startup Exemption for raises up to $5m, a two-tier Fundraising Exemption up to $75m, and a safe harbor letting a token exit investment-contract status once an issuer's managerial efforts are complete – closes October 20; the Commission must still adopt a final rule, which can differ materially from the proposal. The Chatter
QCP Capital (research note, via CoinDesk): warned that further equity-market deleveraging could damp bitcoin's ETF-driven demand and put the $80,000 support level back in play if the stock-market wobble continues – a risk read on positioning, not a call on direction. CoinDesk
Mike Richardson (Bitcoin News Digest, Substack): wrote that the analyst corps remains split on whether bitcoin can still close the year above $100,000, but noted that leverage has largely been flushed from the system after the past month's drawdowns – his own round-up of the debate, not a pick of a side.
