Bitcoin slides below $77,000 as a suspected record-breaking Binance hack compounds tech-sector jitters. Bitcoin fell beneath $77,000 on Friday as word of a suspected ~$6.3bn security breach at Binance rattled sentiment just as Intel's results and AI-spending worries dragged broader tech lower; with a day and a half left in the month, bitcoin is down roughly 8.4% in October, on course for a second straight losing month. Ether eased in step, tracking bitcoin's move without a notable divergence. CoinDesk · Fortune

Markets & flows — ETFs, stablecoins & on-chain

Spot bitcoin ETFs post a fourth straight inflow day – a modest one, and before the Binance news broke. US spot bitcoin ETFs took in a net $17.2m on October 29, per Farside/SoSoValue-sourced data, with BlackRock's IBIT contributing the bulk of the inflow alongside smaller additions from Fidelity's FBTC and Bitwise's BITB, against a roughly $15.3m redemption from Grayscale's BTC fund; the session closed before the Binance breach became public, so it doesn't yet reflect any reaction to it. The Binance hacker splits $1.4bn of bitcoin into 19 wallets structured to dodge freezes. On-chain trackers cited by CoinDesk show the attacker moving roughly 18,270 BTC – about $1.4bn at current prices – out of the addresses tied to the breach and into nineteen separate wallets, a structure meant to keep any single custodian or exchange from freezing the whole sum at once. The industry — exchanges, miners & infrastructure

Binance suffers a suspected $6.3bn breach – possibly the largest crypto exchange hack on record – and suspends withdrawals. Binance paused all deposits and withdrawals late Thursday after what it called a "complex attack," putting the estimated impact at roughly $6.3bn with about $3bn already frozen; the exchange says deposits were unaffected and co-CEO Yi He said customer withdrawals should resume within about 48 hours. Early accounts point to a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop that gave the attacker access to a backend service container used to push unauthorized withdrawal requests – if the scale holds, it would eclipse Bybit's roughly $1.4–1.5bn hack in February 2025 as the industry's largest. TechCrunch · Fox Business

Forensic firms flag North Korea-linked tradecraft behind the breach. Chainalysis told CNN it has "high confidence" the Lazarus Group is behind the attack, and TRM Labs said the intrusion pattern echoes the Bybit hack the FBI attributed to Pyongyang; Binance itself has not commented on attribution. No hash-rate, hosting or fleet news from Marathon, Riot, CleanSpark or Core Scientific this window; Riot's Q3 earnings call is set for November 4.

Policy & regulation

No SEC, CFTC, Treasury/OFAC or overseas-regulator action yet on the Binance breach – expect scrutiny once the tracing settles, but nothing formal to report in this window.

The Chatter

Aravind Srinivasan, GSR trading desk (via Reuters): calls the Binance breach "the biggest hack in history," but argues the more immediate risk to traders isn't the headline dollar figure so much as the wider bid-ask spreads and thinner liquidity now showing up on Binance's own spot order books – his read on market structure, not a price call. Reuters, via Investing.com

TRM Labs (blockchain forensics): argues the attack's tradecraft – a compromised employee laptop leading to backend withdrawal abuse rather than a smart-contract bug – fits the same playbook used in the Bybit hack blamed on North Korea's Lazarus Group, framing state-linked actors, not DeFi exploits, as the leading threat to centralized-exchange custody today. CNN

Otherwise a thin window for freshly argued essays – fintwit is still digesting the scale of the breach rather than publishing independent theses; expect sharper takes once the forensics settle.
