The Market Wrap.

At a glance: No S&P 500 names report today, closing out a quiet back half of the week — Applied Materials and Tapestry were the last prints, Thursday evening and premarket. The calendar reopens Tuesday with a heavy retail and industrial-semis week led by Home Depot, Analog Devices, TJX and Walmart.

Scorecard — reported since we last wrote

Both of Thursday's marquee prints beat on EPS and revenue, and both sold off hard — guidance, not the quarter, set the tone.

Applied Materials beat by 3.1% on EPS (up 22.4% sequentially) and 1.2% on revenue, yet fell 6.4% after hours. The quarter itself was clean; what spooked the tape was the mix underneath it — China's share of revenue stepped down further even as the headline beat, reviving the debate over how durable the AI-capex growth story is once that market keeps shrinking as a proportion of the business. With the implied move already rich and the beat streak perfect heading in, there was little room for a print that was merely good rather than a clean upside surprise on every line.

Tapestry beat by 3.4% on EPS, even as that EPS came in 20.5% below last quarter (the seasonal step-down flagged here yesterday), and revenue was essentially in line at +0.2% — yet the stock dropped 16.5% in the regular session, the sharpest reaction-versus-surprise contradiction of the week. The initial fiscal 2027 guide landed light of Street revenue expectations with EPS guidance roughly in line, and that overshadowed the beat entirely. Kate Spade's continued sales decline kept the brand-divergence issue flagged yesterday front and center, leaving Coach's strength to carry a print the market judged on next year rather than this one.

EPS surprise and Rev. surprise = reported figure against the consensus we flagged in that edition; EPS vs prev.Q = reported EPS against the quarter before it, as a percentage difference. Reaction = the report-day session move; for after-close reporters whose next regular session has not traded yet, the post-market move on the report date, marked “AH”.

The week ahead

Next week reopens with the year's densest retail cluster, bookended by an industrial read. Home Depot leads off Tuesday reporting under interim leadership following CEO Ted Decker's medical leave, with pro-contractor demand and full-year guidance the swing factors against a housing-driven DIY slowdown; Keysight and Jack Henry follow after the close. Wednesday is the heaviest day of the week: Analog Devices opens the session as the test of whether the industrial-semis recovery and data-center-power tailwind that showed up last quarter extends into a fourth straight beat, while TJX and Ross Stores test whether off-price's share-gain trade against mainstream retail still has room to run, alongside Lowe's, Target, Estée Lauder and Nordson. Walmart closes the week Thursday as the broadest read on the US consumer, with tariff pass-through and the grocery-versus-discretionary mix in focus, alongside Deere, still absorbing a sizable tariff cost headwind against soft large-ag demand even as its construction and forestry business offsets some of the pressure.
