The Market Wrap.

At a glance: No S&P 500 names report today — the calendar stays empty until bank earnings season opens tomorrow. Delta closed out last week’s card on Friday; JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, Johnson & Johnson and UnitedHealth headline a heavy Tuesday, with Bank of America and Morgan Stanley following Wednesday.

Scorecard — reported since we last wrote

Delta missed on both lines: EPS of $1.72 against a $1.76 consensus is a 2.3% shortfall, and revenue of $17.59B came in 7.1% light of the $18.92B estimate — a clean double miss, not a rounding error. The tape didn’t punish it, though; the stock closed essentially flat on the session (+0.0%), suggesting the miss was already discounted into the print. On a year-ago basis the number still held up — EPS was roughly in line with the same quarter last year (up 0.6% YoY) — so the shortfall is a story about consensus running ahead of the business this quarter, not about the business shrinking. No income-statement detail is out yet, so margins aren’t part of this one.

EPS surprise and Rev. surprise = reported figure against the consensus we flagged in that edition; shown in grey, and read as in line rather than as a beat or a miss, inside ±2% on EPS and ±0.75% on revenue. EPS YoY = reported EPS against the same quarter a year earlier, as a percentage difference; “—” where that quarter was a loss or has no comparable figure. GM / NM = gross and net margin in the quarter just reported, computed from its income statement, with the move against the previous quarter underneath in percentage points (pp); “—” where the quarter's statement is not out yet, and gross margin is “—” for banks and insurers, which report no gross profit. Reaction = the report-day session move; for after-close reporters whose next regular session has not traded yet, the post-market move on the report date, marked “AH”.

Rest of the week

The week front-loads into Tuesday, when four of the six largest banks plus Johnson & Johnson and UnitedHealth all report before the open. Every money-center bank in the lineup carries consensus growing versus the year-ago quarter — JPMorgan’s $5.94 implies EPS up 17% on that basis, Citigroup’s $2.63 up 16%, Wells Fargo’s $1.85 up 11% — while Johnson & Johnson’s $2.51 consensus implies a 10% YoY decline. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley follow Wednesday alongside BlackRock, and both carry implied moves above 4%. Thursday brings Schwab, Prologis and a run of regional and trust banks, and Friday closes the week with Travelers — whose $7.33 consensus implies EPS down 10% year on year — plus Truist and the smaller regionals.

Yr-ago EPS = EPS in the same quarter a year earlier, for reading consensus against a like-for-like base. Implied move = the move the options market is pricing for the print, from the at-the-money straddle at the first expiry on or after the report date; quoted for the largest names each day, “—” elsewhere. Where that expiry is more than a week out, a note says so — the figure then spans those extra weeks rather than the print alone.
