Market signal

Gold gives back part of Friday's rebound in a thin Columbus Day session; silver holds near $60. With US bond markets shut for the holiday, spot gold eased to USAGOLD's afternoon read of $4,177.28/oz, down $17.53 on the day, after CNBC and Fortune both had it in the $4,160s by mid-morning and Kitco's afternoon tape showed $4,169.50. Silver was little changed near $60/oz. USAGOLD tied the pullback to dealers turning cautious ahead of Tuesday's September CPI print, even as gold-ETF buying kept running hot. Platinum and palladium had no distinct catalyst of their own this window. USAGOLD · CNBC · Fortune

Upstream — miners, streamers & supply

Caledonia Mining cuts 2026 Blanket guidance as a compressed-air bottleneck bites. The Zimbabwe gold producer lowered its full-year output range to 69,000–72,500 oz from 72,000–76,500 oz after Q3 production fell to 17,030 oz (versus 19,106 oz a year earlier), blaming insufficient compressed-air capacity in deeper, higher-grade stopes and gold temporarily held up in the processing circuit. On-mine cost guidance rose to $1,700–1,900/oz and AISC to $2,650–2,850/oz; shares fell roughly 5.6% on the update. Mining Weekly

Galiano Gold locks in long-dated Ghanaian lease extensions at Asanko. The Abirem and Miradani mining leases — covering the Nkran, Adubiaso and Miradani North deposits plus the processing plant — were extended 15 and 17 years, to 2041 and 2043 respectively; CEO Matt Badylak credited Ghana's Minerals Commission and framed the extensions as de-risking the mine's long-term plan and reserve growth. Gold Fields' tilt at Northern Star is unchanged from the September 24 rejection — no revised offer or fresh talks reported this window.

Physical & official flows — central banks, ETFs & bullion

China's gold premium firms as trading resumes after Golden Week; India stays on the sidelines. Bullion traded at roughly a $10/oz premium to the global benchmark as Chinese markets reopened, which MKS PAMP's Bernard Sin read as physical buying interest even though activity remained subdued; Indian demand stayed muted as buyers held off for lower prices ahead of the festival season. No fresh World Gold Council central-bank tally, ETF creation/redemption data or COMEX/LBMA inventory update cleared the bar this window; August's purchases — 39 tonnes, led by China — remain the latest official read, already covered.

The Chatter

A fifth straight quiet window for genuinely new, freely accessible argument from the regular roster. Alden's latest on-record remarks (Kitco, Sept. 29) are already a fortnight old and previously noted here; GoldFix's visible posts remain behind its Founders paywall; nothing fresh turned up from Gromen, Costa, Nieuwenhuijs, Norman, Incrementum or the Council's own analysts. Better to flag the drought than recycle old calls under today's date.
