Crude jumps as the Iran war escalates on two fronts at once. Brent settled up about 3.4% near $106.60/bbl and WTI rose roughly 2.7% to about $94.61/bbl after a Saudi-led coalition said it intercepted six Houthi ballistic missiles aimed at Yanbu and Taif, and a bulk carrier was struck by what appeared to be two torpedo-type projectiles off Oman's Musandam coast, killing one Indian crew member; prices pared some of the intraday spike after a senior Iranian official told Reuters a phased deal — Iran allowing Hormuz transit in exchange for Washington lifting its naval blockade — remains the "most realistic path," even as another Iranian military official warned the war could widen into the Indian Ocean. The US diesel crack spread hits a fresh record even as crude wobbles. The crack has pushed to roughly $106-107/bbl, with national retail diesel near $6.52-6.53/gallon (AAA) and California above $8/gallon, as refiners keep running flat-out with no spare distillate capacity to add. AAA · Wolf Street

Upstream — exploration & production

Aramco plans to carve out a standalone gas division, Reuters reports. Sources say Saudi Aramco is reorganizing into three units — upstream, downstream and a new gas division with its own president — to build out domestic gas and its international LNG portfolio, with capital-raising options including further lease-and-leaseback deals and a possible future minority listing, echoing the playbook ADNOC has used to monetize non-oil units while keeping core crude production closely held. Libya's Sharara outage sharpens: a single valve closure has cut output by two-thirds. An armed group shut Valve No. 7 on the Sharara-Zawiya line around September 21, building pressure that has pushed the field's flow down to roughly 100,000-120,000 b/d from its normal ~300,000+ b/d; Petroleum Facilities Guards are still blocking the Zawiya refinery's gates and the NOC continues to warn force majeure could follow. Tanker freight spirals to fresh records as the war widens. The Baltic Exchange's Oman-China VLCC index has jumped to roughly $358,000/day (up about 144% month-on-month) and the West Africa-China route hit an all-time high near $509,000/day, with separate estimates putting global spot VLCC earnings close to $650,000/day; freight now reportedly runs 20-25%+ of the landed crude price versus 2-3% before the war, as owners price in Hormuz-bypass routing and war-risk insurance. Downstream — refining, fuels & chemicals

Big business tells Trump a diesel export ban would backfire. The US Chamber of Commerce and the Business Roundtable sent the White House a joint letter warning that a diesel export ban would raise domestic fuel prices rather than lower them, a day after Politico reported the administration is drafting a 90-day ban plan and Energy Secretary Chris Wright himself said a full ban "definitely doesn't work" because it would force refiners to cut runs, pushing up gasoline and jet prices instead; a White House official has since said "restrictions" short of a blanket ban are more likely. CNBC · BOE Report

The export-ban debate is already rattling import-dependent markets abroad. Australian analysts warn a US diesel export ban could trigger rationing risk and push local pump prices sharply higher within weeks, underscoring how tight the global diesel balance has become after a month of Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries and record US pump prices. The Chatter

Javier Blas (Bloomberg Opinion): in "The $1 Million-a-Day Oil Tanker Will Drive Inflation," Blas argues freight has become its own inflation-transmission channel — a VLCC costing $1 million a day adds meaningfully to landed crude and product costs independent of the crude price itself, complicating any clean read of what's actually driving fuel inflation. Post (paywall)

Doomberg (Doomcast, video): in "Russia's Energy Deal With China Changes Everything," Doomberg argues the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline deal is a watershed that Western sanctions cannot really touch, pointing to the EU's own LNG sanctions as proof — Western engineering firms exited Russian LNG projects, Russia built its own compressors, and the EU is now importing roughly 18% more Russian LNG than before the sanctions.
