Market signal
Crude grinds higher as Trump denies easing Iran sanctions. Brent rose to $103.73/bbl (+1.11%) and WTI to $89.72 (+0.38%), with the move tied to Trump pushing back on reports the White House was preparing sanctions relief for Iran — keeping the war-risk premium intact even as Saudi Red Sea loadings continue to recover (see prior editions). Brent is on pace for its biggest monthly gain since July, up roughly 14% in September. InvestingCube
EIA: crude stocks build, products draw again. Commercial crude inventories rose 0.9 million bbl to 427.3 million for the week to September 26, while gasoline fell 1.7 million bbl to 204.4 million (vs. a 0.5 million draw expected) and distillate fell 2.3 million bbl to 105.2 million (vs. a 0.2 million draw expected); refinery utilization slipped 1.5 points to 92.5%. Product draws outrunning forecasts again points to the same refining bottleneck behind the diesel/gasoline tightness of recent weeks. EIA Weekly Petroleum Status Report
Upstream — exploration & production
DOE solicits the final 40 million bbl of its emergency reserve release. The Energy Department is offering the last tranche of the 172-million-barrel Strategic Petroleum Reserve release Trump authorized in March as part of a 30-nation IEA coordinated release, structured as an exchange (borrowers return the barrels plus a premium) with deliveries from the Big Hill and Bryan Mound sites in November and December. The SPR now sits under 284 million barrels, its lowest since 1982. US Department of Energy · 24/7 Wall St.
Midstream — pipelines, LNG & shipping
UKMTO logs three more Hormuz tanker strikes, including the first LNG carrier hit in weeks. The UK's maritime security agency issued time-late warnings for three separate incidents on Tuesday: a crude oil tanker struck on the port side by an unknown projectile (Warning 144-26), a second tanker hit while transiting inbound (145-26), and an LNG carrier struck (146-26); no group has claimed responsibility and UKMTO reported no casualties. The LNG hit is notable — most recent strikes have targeted crude and product tankers. UKMTO · Newsquawk
Downstream — refining, fuels & chemicals
No fresh downstream catalyst beyond this week's government data: distillate and gasoline draws outpaced forecasts again (see Market signal), consistent with the refining-capacity squeeze already flagged in recent editions, but no new outage, startup or policy move surfaced in the window.
The Chatter
Javier Blas (Bloomberg Opinion): asks why Brent is still above $100 if, as the White House claims, Trump is winning the battle for Hormuz and the strait is effectively open — arguing the persistent premium undercuts the administration's own narrative of a battle being won, and posing the uncomfortable question of what "losing" would even look like from here. Bloomberg Opinion (paywall)
HFI Research (Substack/X): argues today's DOE announcement of the final 40-million-barrel SPR exchange is a deliberate attempt to wash out oil longs into quarter-end, calling it "the final TACO," but contends any price relief will prove temporary since the release doesn't touch the underlying physical deficit driving the rally.
