Market signal

Brent cools from a fresh five-month high as the market digests Tuesday's $112 spike. Brent settled Tuesday at $108.79/bbl, down 0.69%, after touching $111.99 intraday — its best level since May; the expiring WTI November contract settled at $101.79, down 1.8%. Brent was back above $109.60 in early Wednesday trade. Reuters cites Kpler data showing at least 18 attacks on shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz over the past two weeks as the driver, alongside lingering uncertainty over the scope of the White House's Russia sanctions waiver. CNBC

EIA: crude, gasoline both draw harder than expected; distillates build instead of drawing. The weekly Petroleum Status Report for the week to October 16 showed commercial crude stocks down 3.06 million bbl to 412.5 million (vs. a forecast 0.82-million-bbl draw), gasoline down 2.95 million bbl to 205.3 million, and distillates up 1.68 million bbl to 104.3 million — a surprise build against a forecast 1.16-million-bbl draw, with diesel stocks alone up 1.3 million bbl. Cushing stocks rose 987,000 bbl; refinery utilization slipped 0.1 point to 93.4% even as crude runs edged up 34,000 b/d. Oil & Gas Journal

Upstream — exploration & production

No material upstream production, licensing, FID or M&A news crossed the wire in the window; OPEC+'s next policy decision isn't due until the November 1 meeting.

Midstream — pipelines, LNG & shipping

Beyond the Hormuz attack tempo already captured in Market signal, no distinct new pipeline, LNG or shipping development crossed the wire in the window.

Downstream — refining, fuels & chemicals

Dangote keeps its $1.6-2.1bn refinery IPO open through October 27 on African investor demand. Nigeria's SEC approved a two-week extension (from an original October 13 close) for the 650,000 b/d Lagos refinery's share offer, which Dangote says has already drawn a record number of unique retail subscribers; the company wants more time to route cross-border African investors through depositary-receipt and additional distribution channels before allotment, expected around November 17 and trading in December. No other structural refining, petrochemical or biofuels news crossed the wire in the window.

The Chatter

A genuinely quiet window for independent oil and gas commentary: none of Doomberg, HFI Research, Rory Johnston's Commodity Context, Arjun Murti's Super-Spiked, Javier Blas, Art Berman, Goehring & Rozencwajg, Eric Nuttall, or Energy Aspects' and RBN Energy's public notes had a freely accessible post clearly dated to the last 24 hours by time of writing.
