Government bond buyback draws bids for barely a quarter of the notified amount. Thursday's buyback of four short-dated securities (7.33% GS 2026, 5.74% GS 2026, 8.15% GS 2026, 8.24% GS 2027), notified at ₹30,000 crore and run on RBI's E-Kuber platform via the multiple-price method, accepted just ₹7,388.194 crore — led by ₹2,925.252 crore of 8.15% GS 2026 (fully accepted at a cut-off of ₹101.06) and ₹2,923.504 crore of 5.74% GS 2026 (cut-off ₹100.11). RBI attributed the thin take-up to ample banking-system liquidity, which has left holders with little incentive to sell short paper back to the government. RBI press releases
Two overnight VRRR rounds absorb over ₹5.5 lakh crore as the system liquidity surplus hits a four-year high. Thursday's first overnight Variable Rate Reverse Repo auction (notified ₹6,00,000 crore, for reversal on 4 September) drew and fully accepted ₹5,18,742 crore at a 5.24% cut-off and weighted average rate; a second overnight round the same day (notified ₹1,50,000 crore) drew just ₹34,652 crore, also at 5.24%. Banking-system surplus liquidity has risen to ₹6.65 lakh crore, its highest since April 2022, on strong FCNR(B) swap inflows — banks had raised $65.4 billion via FCNR(B) deposits by 21 August, subsequently swapped with RBI for rupees. RBI has since notified a 3-day VRRR auction for today, 4 September, sized at ₹7,00,000 crore. RBI press releases

Malaysia — BNM: The Monetary Policy Committee held the Overnight Policy Rate at 2.75% for a seventh consecutive meeting. The statement describes the stance as "consistent with the outlook of continued price stability and sustainable economic growth" — dropping the word "appropriate" that qualified the same sentence in July's statement — and says the MPC "will remain vigilant to ongoing developments and assess the balance of risks surrounding the outlook for domestic inflation and growth." Headline and core inflation averaged 1.8% and 2% respectively over January–July; H1 2026 growth ran at 5.7%. BNM OPR decisions
